Background of the study
Islamic Studies revolves around learning about Islam and its creeds. The primary sources of Islamic Studies are Qur'an and Hadith. The original language of these two prime sources of Islamic knowledge is Arabic. Thus, the description of the Qur’an and Hadith and their inevitability in the practice of Islam make it imperative that Arabic should be recognized as part and parcel of Islamic studies. This implies that in an attempt to study and practice Islam properly, one needs to dispose positively to the knowledge of Arabic. Ajidagba (2004) was of the view that a student of Islamic studies who is bereft of knowledge of Arabic but relies solely on his/her proficiency in English language to get through in Islamic studies will have academic problem. To avert this problem, there is the need to sensitise students of Islamic studies to the necessity of getting acquainted with the knowledge of Arabic. The learning of Islamic education is essential for every Muslim because it is a gateway for knowing Islam and its teachings. Through Islamic education, the character building of a good Muslim as an individual and a member of society would be developed. Islamic education plays a significant role in a Muslim’s life as asserted by Syed Ali Ashraf (1985: 24) who defines Islamic education as “an education which trains the sensibility of pupils in such a manner that in their attitude to life, their actions and decisions and approach to all kinds of knowledge, they are governed by the deeply felt ethical values of Islam.” Realising the importance of Islamic education as the medium for inculcating Islamic teachings and values into Muslim students, it is therefore very important to sustain students’ interest in learning this subject. However, studies conducted on the teaching and learning of Islamic education at schools reported that students were not interested or had lesser interest to learn the subject (for example, see Nik Rosila, 2007; Aiiri, 2003; Dk Hajah Nur Ashikin, 2002; Mohamad Sahari & Hassan Langgulung, 1999; Abdul Aziz, 1995). In fact, the lack of interest among students to learn Islamic education would create a barrier between them and Islamic teachings, and as a result, the noble aims of Islamic education would not be materialised. Muslim students are supposed to have deep interest towards Islamic education in order to gain deep understanding of their religion. However, when they are not interested in learning it, efforts need to be taken to improve the teaching and learning of Islamic education. Since interest can motivate learning, knowing the factors that could influence students’ interest is very important. Therefore the study seeks to evaluate lagos state primary pupils' attitude and motivation for learning islamic religious studies.
Statement of the problem
Islamic Studies as a subject is not just for learning sake but it is beyond that. Despite the reality that Islam places much emphasis on education and knowledge acquisition, Islamic Studies as a subject also guides individual to live a moral life. It appears that students of nowadays have developed more interest in other subjects like English, Biology, Economics, etc. as a result of which there is clear difference between the academic performance in Islamic Studies compared to other related subjects. We note with dismay that students still record failure. in the subject despite many factors put in place for effective teaching and learning process. Regrettably, Researchers have observed that students’ performance in this subject is not encouraging at post primary school level of education in Nigeria (WAEC Report). Researchers have also observed that students’ poor performance and failure in Islamic Studies remain the same. And this can be attributed to the attitude and motivation of students towards Islamic religious studies. Hence, the study evaluate Lagos State primary pupils' attitude and motivation for learning Islamic religious studies
